Even though most systems these days operate at a very similar feature and performance level, there are many benefits to using Linux systems over the traditional Microsoft or Apple systems. The most obvious reason to use Linux is pricing, not only are there no licensing fees to be paid everytime you add a new system to your network, it's also free to upgrade to the latest and greatest version of the software. 

Although you don't lose the support and maintenance costs that come with the other systems, the operational and support costs are generally less with a properly configured Linux system verses other systems. Linux can also run well on older hardware, saving money on unnecessary upgrades over time.

There are equally important reasons including being built from the ground up as a multi-user system, the freedom to use the software as you see fit, the ability to find out what is in the code you are using and the ability to have the systems modified to suit your needs.
